Why Changing Your Timing Belt or Wet Belt On Time Really Matters

Your engine relies on thousands of precise movements happening in perfect sync. The component that keeps all of that timing spot-on is the timing belt (or wet belt, depending on your vehicle). It might not look like much, but it’s one of the most important parts of your engine.
And when it’s due for replacement, it should never be ignored.
What does a timing belt actually do?
In simple terms, the timing belt keeps the camshaft and crankshaft moving together at exactly the right moment. This allows your valves and pistons to operate in perfect harmony. If the belt slips, stretches, or breaks, that harmony disappears in an instant.
The result can be catastrophic.

Why wet belts need extra attention
Many modern Ford, Vauxhall, and Peugeot engines use a wet belt instead of a traditional timing belt. These run inside the engine oil, which means:
They degrade faster if oil quality is poor
Missing oil changes accelerates wear
Small pieces of worn belt can block the oil pickup, starving the engine
Wet belts often have longer recommended intervals, but when they go wrong, they tend to go very wrong.
What happens if you don’t replace it on time?
We see it in workshops far too often. Leaving a timing belt or wet belt past its intended replacement window can cause:
Complete engine failure
Bent valves
Damaged pistons
Blocked oil systems (wet belts)
Repair bills that can easily reach into the thousands
Unfortunately, when a timing belt fails, it’s almost never a cheap fix.
The benefits of changing it on schedule
Replacing your belt when the manufacturer recommends protects your engine, your wallet, and your peace of mind.
You’ll benefit from:
A quieter, smoother-running engine
Better reliability, especially on longer journeys
Avoiding sudden breakdowns
Extending the lifespan of your vehicle
Keeping your service history stronger for resale value
It’s one of the most cost-effective preventative maintenance jobs you can do.
How often should it be changed?
This varies by manufacturer and engine type, but most belts fall between 5 to 10 years or 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Wet belts often have specific guidelines tied to oil quality.
If you’re unsure, we can check your exact interval in minutes.
